Q: What age group will be most successful with the SIY courses?
A: Much depends on the individual student, and whether they have an adult mentor or are studying independently. Without a mentor, age 12 and older is recommended.
Q: How long might it take a student to complete each SIY course?
A: A suggested schedule will be included with each classroom package, and students or mentors may adapt that as they wish. If a student spends 1 hour/week on the courses, they could anticipate finishing Level 1 in 5-6 weeks, and Level 2 in 6-7 weeks. Adding personal practice time to what is included will aid in skill and confidence, and is highly recommended.
Q: What is NOT provided with the course?
A: At a minimum, the student must provide his/her own basic sewing machine, plus all-purpose thread and fabric scissors. Practice and project materials are required for full learning, and are included with some package levels offered.
Q: How does the school video subscription work?
A: The school creates a log-in, which all students will use to view the course videos. Access is valid from August to August, and is renewable each year.
Q: Does each student need a personal manual, or is it practical for them to share?
A: This is up to the school! If it’s desirable for students to have the option to work independently at home, it’s a good idea to purchase a manual for each individual. They will be able to refer back to it any time they have questions. Another option is to purchase a “classroom set” which can be used year to year, with the understanding students will only be able to use to the manual in class.
Q: Why is there a minimum order requirement?
A: Pricing is based on a group discount. If a school anticipates fewer than six students will use the course in a year, it may make sense to purchase individual course kits. Consider that extra manuals or material sets can be carried over and used the following year. Save $50 when renewing the school’s video subscription each year.
Q: What can we suggest to our students to further their sewing studies?
A: The combination of Basic Beginner 1 and Confident Beginner 2 will give students a strong base from which to continue sewing. Save $50 when purchasing both courses at once. With this foundation, guide them to simple projects found by searching online using key words like "easy sewing projects for beginners". This desire to strengthen early skills through sewing is why we've created SIY Project Kits, all beginner-friendly and ready-to-sew.
